Type I diabetes is an autoimmune disease triggered by autoantibodies against pancreatic islet cells and against insulin itself. Autoantibodies against insulin can appear in the prediabetic phase of type I diabetes or once the condition manifests.
These autoantibodies are found in 50 to 70 % of children with diabetes type I and 20 to 30 % of affected adults. In rare cases, insulin-dependent diabetes patients generate antibodies against exogenous insulin.
These antibodies can give rise to insulin-resistance and should therefore be controlled regularly when monitoring insulin therapy.
