About Stool Assays
Gastroenterological diseases often present the same unspecific symptoms: abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fever. These do not only occur in cases of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis; they are also typical of infections of the digestive tract or in cases of irritable bowel syndrome. In addition, intolerance to certain foods, celiac disease, or gastrointestinal tumors can cause these same symptoms.
Sebia offers a comprehensive panel of non-invasive diagnostic tests for gastroenterological diseases. The stool tests are useful for differentiated diagnosis of an inflammation located in the gastrointestinal tract. They can help to clarify a preliminary diagnosis and may be administered prior to using imaging techniques and endoscopic examinations.
The detection of calprotectin in stool supports the differentiation of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). In cases of IBS, calprotectin values are in the normal range. Elevated calprotectin levels are found in cases of IBD, infectious gastroenteritis, necrotizing enterocolitis, allergic colitis, cystic fibrosis, and colorectal carcinoma.
The detection of lactoferrin in stool adds a useful intestinal inflammatory parameter to complement laboratory diagnostics.
